Bad weather forecast in the Dalwhinnie area meant a forced change of plan and a quick re-think as to where we should head for our weekends pedalling.
It was decided to throw the bikes into the back of Dave’s trusty Range Rover and return to the Trossachs to tackle a well known loop starting and finishing at the Glen Finglas Scottish woodlands Trust car park to the east of Brig O’ Turk.
Our route took us through a nice deciduous woodland section with some nice views over Loch Venacher before picking up a tarmac road running along the shore of Glen Finglas reservoir. This road eventually petered out at Ben Ledi cottage and was replaced with a good Landrover track . After coming to a fork in the track at the bottom of Creag na Croiteige we took the route to the right and headed onwards and upwards through the barren moorland to reach the high point at Lag a Phuill. This was a struggle with a very steep gradient meaning a fair bit of pushing and the light rain showers encountered on the lower slopes changed to snow as we reached the high point. A stone cairn signified the summit and from then on it was a long and fast descent down Glen Finglas, crossing Finglas water before meeting up with the original track at the fork. It was then a case of re-tracing our wheel tracks along the undulating route but instead of taking the direct track back to the car park we kept on the tarmac road and headed past the dam and power station into Brig O’ Turk before picking up the main road from where we headed east for a kilometre or so back to the car.

Another good route out in the exposed hillside that requires a high degree of fitness but with nothing to technical. Care should be taken on the descent - keep an eye out for the cattle roaming free on the hillside - you won’t want to come off second best in a collision with one of those beasts!
